Local MP Steve McGhie visits Harkness Memorial Park construction site

On 11 December, we welcomed Local MP Steve McGhie to Harkness Memorial Park to showcase progress on this vital community asset for the City of Melton and Melbourne’s west.
Joined by GMCT’s Chair, Deputy Chair, CEO, and the project team, Steve toured the site and learned more about how the vision for the new memorial park is taking shape on the ground.
During the visit, Steve was particularly impressed by the native tree species already planted on site. These plantings respond to both the local ecology and traditional knowledge, creating a landscape that honours the natural environment of Melbourne’s west.
He also reflected on the scale of the future park and its importance for the growing communities of Melton and surrounding areas, recognising the long-term planning required to deliver memorial parks that serve communities into the future.
With retirement from Parliament on the horizon, we thank Steve for his support and advocacy over the years.
Steve’s engagement with Harkness Memorial Park reflects a genuine understanding of the need for these community spaces. Memorial parks require long-term planning and investment at many levels, and having advocates who recognise their importance to growing communities makes a real difference.
Main construction will continue in January 2026 after a short break over the holiday period.
